Westman Naturalists - Bird names and Migration - What is in a name and how do they get there?

Friday, Apr 5, 2024 at 7:00PM

Brodie Building Rm 3-47, Brandon University & Online

Several bird species have English names which are considered harmful and exclusionary, but how do we approach this problem? Join the Westman Naturalists as we learn more about how the American Ornithological Society is addressing this conundrum. Dr. Erica Nol will share with us insights from working on this AOS committee as well as some exciting work on migratory shorebirds in Northern Manitoba.

Erica is a Professor of Biology at Trent University, teaching introductory biology, research design and data analysis, and field courses in ornithology. Erica has supervised over 60 graduate students, many of whom have conducted their research in Northern Manitoba, where Churchill turns out to be a site of significant importance to a number of uncommon shorebird species.

This is a hybrid event! Erica will be joining us via Zoom, but we'll still be meeting in person!
Feel free to come in person to socialize with your fellow Westman Naturalists and see the talk, or join us via Zoom.
For Zoom, please complete and submit this short form to sign-up. We will email out the Zoom link that evening.
